Maria Alonzo has served as a counselor/advocate at Polk County Crisis and Advocacy Services for the last 22 years. She is driven by her passion for the community and works to cultivate hope and resilience through advocacy, empowerment and relationship-building.
In 2012 she co-founded Giant Pekes Soccer,聽a year-round community soccer program. 聽It was originally aimed at聽engaging聽Latinx聽families and youth to promote聽wellness, character, sportsmanship and social responsibility. The program has become a聽perfect聽platform to create community as it continues to draw in families and individuals聽of all backgrounds聽who have a passion for the sport.
Over the course of the past 25 years, Maria聽has served on several boards including聽Proteus,聽Latinas Unidas Por Un Nuevo Amanecer and聽Latina Leadership Initiative. She has volunteered for additional community initiatives and groups.
Maria has a Bachelor鈥檚 in Social Work from Iowa State University and also holds a Master鈥檚 in Counseling from Drake University.
She has three children. Mauricio Javier recently graduated from DMPS in May 2021 and Lianna and Carlos attend Hoover High School.
